Why Outside?

I love to conduct sessions in nature. It is not a form of exercise but a chance to energize, enhance, and expand the ways I serve my clients. Here are a few of my whys….

1.)    Connecting with Nature: Being in a natural environment can have a calming and grounding effect on us. Nature has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and it provides a sense of peace and tranquility. This environment can create a more engaged, relaxed and open atmosphere for therapy sessions.

2.)    Enhanced Well-Being: Engaging with nature has been linked to improved mental well-being and overall happiness. The fresh air, natural light, and exposure to green spaces can positively influence mood and help individuals feel rejuvenated and revitalized.

3.)    Reduced Stigma: For some, a traditional indoor therapy setting might be intimidating. Sitting for an extended amount of time might make you feel itchy! It can be overwhelming to start the therapy process. Being outside can offer a sense of freedom to discuss your thoughts and feelings.

4.)    Physical Movement: Increasing and harnessing one’s somatic wisdom starts with the body and where better to do that than outside! Dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, famously known as the feel-good hormones, can help regulate your mood and promote positive feelings, including happiness and pleasure. These can be increased by a number of activities but physical movement can help release them all.

5.)    Metaphorical Exploration: Let’s get hippie with it! Nature can serve as a metaphorical tool during therapy sessions. The challenges and processes observed in the natural world can be used to reflect and explore one's own life and personal growth. For example, witnessing the changing seasons or overcoming obstacles in nature can parallel the changes and challenges in a person's life.

6.)    Increased Creativity and Inspiration: Being in nature can stimulate creativity and encourage new perspectives. The sights, sounds, and textures in the natural environment can inspire clients to think differently and explore various aspects of their lives.

7.)    Mindfulness and Presence: The outdoor setting can help foster mindfulness and being present in the moment. Clients may find it easier to focus on their thoughts and emotions while surrounded by nature's beauty, leading to a more profound therapeutic experience.

8.)    Relationship with Therapist: Outdoor therapy can create a unique bond between the therapist and the client. The shared experience of being in nature can enhance therapeutic relationship and create a different kind of connection.

It's important to note that while outdoor therapy can offer many benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone or for every therapeutic need. Ultimately, the effectiveness of outdoor therapy depends on the individual's preferences and the specific therapeutic goals. To accommodate this need I also meet with client via telehealth.

FAQs

Where are we going?

Outdoor sessions are held in a semi-private outdoor space in Castle Rock, Colorado. Coming Summer 2025 Rooted will be hosted on a private farm.

What about the weather?

Rooted Family Therapy philosophy follows the Scandinavian Forest School ideals and believes cold/wet weather can be an enriching and a resilience building environment.

Only temperatures under 17 degrees Fahrenheit, blizzard conditions, and other extreme weather will result in a reschedule.  In the event of thunder and lightning clients and therapists will find shelter.

But what about Telehealth?

Although I do believe in the benefits of working in nature, I understand this might not be suitable for all and I am available for clients via telehealth as well.

Do you take insurance?

Currently I do not accept Insurance or Medicaid.

Hi! I’m Tina (she/her)

I have always been a therapist, even when I was a bartender, I was a therapist. I am innately curious about the human experience. Hearing another’s story or getting a glimpse into their reality is a privilege that I do not take lightly.

My stance on therapy: You know yourself better than I ever will. Sometimes we get stuck in loops that do not work or things happen that make living day to day, or even minute to minute, difficult. I believe you are a complete, beautiful, and capable human. I hold up the mirror to help you see that again or maybe for the first time.

In session we will laugh, we will cry, and we might even scream if the moment takes us. I have a fierce belief in the power of therapy and one’s own somatic wisdom. I blend brain sciences, body movement, mindful tactics, and nature into treatment.

I practice in a culturally and spiritually responsive way and am affirming of the needs of marginalized identities in BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ people.

My mission for Rooted Family Therapy is a little selfish. I want to raise my children in a strong, connected, supportive, safe, and caring community. I want to live in a place that feels welcoming and inclusive, where the residents thrive. I believe that by helping to build strong, healthy families, couples, and individuals, I can nurture the very community I call home.

More about me…I have 2 kids, married to my husband for 10+ years. I identify as queer and white. I love/need sunshine and consider myself kind of a witchy hippie. I love the smell of burning sage, am a proud neurodivergent, and am committed to my own journey of healing and growth. Oh, and I LOVE to dance!
